Autograph retiming, motion blur, and deflicker plugin checklist
A compact test checklist for using retiming, motion blur, and flicker-cleanup plug-ins in Autograph before trusting them on a production shot.
Why this page exists
Autograph is now positioned as a free motion graphics and VFX/compositing host with OpenFX support, multi-channel EXR support, ACES and OCIO workflows, and direct access to Red Giant OFX and Universe tools. Maxon also lists third-party OpenFX plug-in support beginning with RE:Vision Effects, BorisFX, and Digital Anarchy. That makes Autograph interesting as a lightweight host, but it also means every plug-in workflow should be verified on real footage rather than assumed from another host.
Useful test categories
- Retiming: test a clip with crossing limbs, camera motion, motion blur, a hard edit, and an object leaving frame. The pass/fail question is whether the tool creates usable in-between frames without stretching, tearing, or interpolating across cuts.
- Motion blur: test a clean graphic move, a live-action pan, and one shot with roto or alpha. Compare no blur, host blur, plug-in blur, and rendered output. Do not judge only in the viewer.
- Deflicker: test a time-lapse or exposure-pulsing clip, a shot with intentional lighting changes, and a shot with moving foreground objects. The goal is to remove unwanted flicker without flattening deliberate luminance changes.
- Color-managed footage: repeat one test through the same OCIO or ACES viewing path used by the project. A cleanup plug-in may look correct in a display-referred preview but produce different values once rendered into the show pipeline.
- EXR handoff: for multi-channel EXR sources, test which channel or layer the plug-in actually reads, whether alpha is preserved, and whether the render keeps the expected channel structure.
Minimal verification project
- Create a short Autograph project with one live-action clip, one graphic animation, one alpha element, and one multi-channel EXR or rendered pass.
- Apply one retiming effect, one motion-blur effect, and one flicker-cleanup effect in separate comps or clearly named layers.
- Render short sections to the same codec or image sequence expected in real delivery.
- Re-import the renders and compare against the source comp, not only the live viewer.
- Record the Autograph version, OS, GPU, plug-in version, project color settings, source format, and render format.
Failure signs
- Motion vectors jump at cuts, flashes, dissolves, or occlusion boundaries.
- Fine detail swims when speed is changed.
- Motion blur is doubled because the source already has blur and the plug-in adds a second pass.
- Deflicker removes intentional lighting cues or causes slow exposure pumping.
- The preview looks acceptable but the rendered file differs after color management or alpha handling.
Practical rule
Treat Autograph as the host being tested, not just the plug-in. The same OFX plug-in family may be stable in Nuke, Resolve, Flame, or After Effects, but production confidence in Autograph depends on the exact Autograph build, plug-in build, footage format, GPU path, and render path used on the job.
